Heavy Breeds
Black Orpington
The original Orpington, the Black, was developed in England in 1886 and brought to the US in 1890. It was developed from Langshan-Rock-Minorca crosses. Today Buff, Black and Blue Orpingtons are recognized. Developed as a dual purpose breed, Orpingtons make fair table fowl and are good winter layers of large light brown eggs. They have very laid back personalities and are very docile.
North Holland Blue and North Holland Blue Bantams
North Holland Blues were developed early in the Twentieth Century in the province of North Holland. The North Holland Blue is found in Cuckoo, not Barred and is sex-linked as females are much darker than males. In England they are standardized with feathered legs (mostly to distinguish them from the Marans), although the original Dutch birds are clean legged. In New Zealand they also have clean legs. The North Holland Blue has white legs and skin and red lobes and lays a tinted egg.
North Holland Blue Bantams are great we layers, I am still working on these but have found them very docile birds and very good layers.
Light,Coronation,Speckeled,Red,Buff and White Sussex
The most common breed of Sussex is the Light Sussex, Sussex are ment to be the best egg layer and table bird combined. The Coronation Sussex which instead of being white with black neck and tail are white with blue/lavender tail are very good layers. The speckeled,Red, Buff and White I am still working on. The Reds are very nice birds and lay a very big brown egg. The Buff and Speckeled we have only just started with eggs this year so will hopefully have them availble in a couple of years. The whites are very nice birds and is are very good layers.
